Main Goals, Keywords

Rehabilitation of patients with diseases of or trauma to the nervous system, e.g. stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease etc. Referral Centre for medico-legal expertises in neurological disorders.

Previous and Current Research

Neurorehabilitation is the completion of treatment of patients with chronic neurological diseases. We try to constantly improve treatment modalities and to measure effectiveness on scales of impairment, disability, handicap and quality of life. Standards and models of care for multiple sclerosis are developed in close collaboration with other Centres. Clinical studies on epidemiological aspects and pathogenesis of MS. Participation in double-blind studies on the effect of interferons in early treatment of MS.

Future Projects

Quantification of effectiveness of neurorehabilitation in stroke and multiple sclerosis and of the "carry-over"-effect into the life outside the institution. Role of vasoactive substances (e.g. endothelin, NO) in pathophysiology of different phases of MS. Dynamics of effects of steroids on the blood-brain barrier in MRI.

Techniques and Equipment

60 bed neurorehabilitation clinic, hydrotherapy, treadmill training, gait analysis system, direct acces to MRI.
